The GPRS Roaming service is available to all postpaid subscribers on the Yettel network that meet roaming conditions, on networks with which Yettel has signed GPRS roaming agreements.
GPRS Roaming fully allows for the use of PC Internet applications even outside the subscribers network, starting with e-mail and chat, Internet searching and use of FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to Internet sales. POS (Point of Sale) services, for verifying credit and payment cards, can also be used thanks to the speed and security of data-transfer, as well as database searching, field sales and use of banking applications. GPRS can also be used for telemetry, distribution systems (such as supply), dispatch services (police, taxi), etc.
All the networks with which we have signed GPRS roaming agreements also allow for the use of MMS services, but the exchange of MMS messages is possible only between Yettel subscribers, regardless of whether they are on their home network or on a network with which we have a GPRS agreement. An exception are Montenegrin networksT-Mobile and Yettel (Promonte) with which sending and receiving MMS messages functions the same way as it does with subscribers to the Yettel network. Subscribers that are in roaming will be charged for sending and receiving MMS messages in accordance with the GPRS tariffs.
GPRS roaming can be used in the following countries: Europe, Asia, Africa, Northern America, Southern America, Australia
- Postpaid customers: 1 KB (kilobyte) of data transferred is charged 0,05 RSD · (except for Prenesi Plus tariff package users, price per 1KB is 0,01 RSD)
- Prepaid customers: 1KB is charged 0,06 RSD, while prepaid customers must have at least 20,00 RSD on their prepaid account in order to use this sevice
- Kombinuj customers: 1KB is charged 0,06 RSD
What is GPRS?
GPRS is the abbreviation for General Packet Radio Service. This is a new technology that is intended for transferring data within the existing GSM network. GPRS allows users access to the public Internet network, as well as to other networks based on the IP protocol. In short, GPRS is a new way of transferring data over mobile handsets. In addition to the Internet, GPRS provides access to standards WAP contents over mobile handsets, but faster and easier that before.
Who can use GPRS?
GPRS is available to all postpaid and prepaid subscribers to Yettel network that have a handset that supports GPRS.
What does charging according to transferred data mean?
This meant that you can be connected to the WAP or Web for as long as you want, and you will be charged only for the data that you transferred, and not the surfing time.
The average size of certain documents is:
- 100 WAP pages is approximately 100 KB
- 1 Web page is approximately 100 KB
- 1 MS Word document (10 pages of text without graphics) is approximately 100 KB
- 1 e-mail (4,000 characters) is approximately 3 KB.
What is 1 MB?
This is a unit for quantity of data, and is approximately 800 normal WAP pages, 400 e-mails or 90 pages of MS Word documents. 1 MB is 1024 KB.
How is it used?
A subscriber that has a mobile handset that supports GPRS can connect to the Internet with one simple click on his/her handset, i.e. access Internet sites adapted to mobile handset technology, so-called WAP. Full Internet access over GPRS requires a notebook computer and mobile handset that supports GPRS. The handset and computer can be linked by cable, infrared port (IrDA) or Bluetooth. The GPRS handset can be replaced by GPRS modems in PC card format, which the SIM card is inserted into. There are also external GPRS modems that connect to the computer over the USB port, and can therefore be connected to desktop computers.
What will happen when I want to answer an incoming call while data is being transferred over the GPRS?
The subscriber can answer the call and resume the data transfer upon completion of the conversation.
Is it necessary to have a notebook in order to use the advantages of GPRS?
No, you can use a GPRS handset in order to surf WAP pages. GPRS handsets can be used to connect a desktop computer to the Internet. GPRS can also be used to synchronize databases, check bank accounts, and use e-mail.
What are the advantages over GSM?
- faster access (several seconds)
- The user can be connected to the GPRS network (always online)
- much higher transfer rate (max. 53.6 Kbps)
- The user can receive calls while surfing the Internet
- charging based on the quantity of transferred data, not based on time required to read the contents you will be charged only for transferred data, and not for the connection time, regardless of how long you were connected to WAP or the Internet.
What are the advantages of accessing the Internet using GPRS compared to access over a landline?
User mobility is the main advantage of GPRS. The GPRS service is available wherever there is GSM network coverage. This means that you can access the Internet from any location where there is a Yettel network signal.
How can I activate this service?
With activation of the number, GPRS is automaticaly activated.
Where all can GPRS be used?
Throughout the territory covered by Yettel network.
What affects the quality of this service?
Handset characteristics affect transfer speed. The network allows for transfers of up to 53.6 Kbps, but not all handset models can achieve this speed. Speed is also affected by the position of the user relative to the base station. In zones where the network signal is weaker the subscriber has fewer channels available and therefore the transfer rate will be somewhat lower.
What mobile handsets support GPRS?
All newer handset models support GPRS. The list of most commonly used handsets is available on the configuration page.
How do I configure my handset for using GPRS?
Each handset model requires special configuration. The user can choose one of the following three ways, in accordance with his/her abilities:
- Manual configuration. Handset configuration instructions are listed on the “Subscriber Service – Configuration” page.
- Sending an SMS from the handset. Newer Nokia and Ericsson models can be configured automatically, using an SMS message. The subscriber sends an SMS message with the test “GPRS” to 063/9863. The subscriber’s handset will receive a configuration message that should be saved to the handset.
- Sending a configuration message from the Internet. By entering his/her telephone number on the webpage for automatic GPRS configuration, the subscriber can “send himself/herself” an SMS message that will automatically set up the handset’s GPSR parameters.
Can GPRS be used in Roaming?
Long-term Yettel network subscribers can also use GPRS when in Roaming. Bilateral GPRS roaming agreements have been signed with a number of foreign mobile operators, and new international partners are being added to this list almost on a daily basis.
How do additional GMS services function with GPRS (e.g. SMS and WAP)?
SMS can be sent using GPRS or GSM. The user chooses on his/her handset whether SMS will be sent over GPRS or GSM. Charges remain as they were until now, which means that the subscriber is charged the same as for GSM. Using WAP is much faster over GPRS: surfing speed (opening WAP pages) is much faster, in addition to the shorter access time. Charging according to data transfer is also a great advantage.
What is the basic difference between GPRS and GSM?
GSM
- slower access time (dial-up)
- lower data transfer rate (max. 9.6 Kbps)
- busy line during WAP and Web surfing
- subscriber is charged for time spent online
GPRS
faster access time
greater data transfer rate (53.6 Kbps)
possibility of receiving calls during WAP and Web surfing
charging based on quantity of transferred data
What is APN?
APN is the abbreviation for Access Point Name. This represents the GPRS network connection point to an external network (Internet, intranet, WAP). This is the main parameter that needs to be configured in the handset. The Internet and WAP APN on the Yettel network are one and the same, and it is called “internet”.
What are the parameters of Yettel GPRS network?
APN = internet
Username = yettel
Password = gprs
What is the data-transfer speed over GPRS?
The maximum data-transfer speed is 53.6 Kbps. This is almost the same speed that is achieved when connecting to the Internet over a telephone network landline (like on a desktop computer).
Is the subscriber unavailable for incoming calls while logged on to the Internet?
No. The advantage of GPRS is that the voice channel is always free, therefore it cannot happen that the user will miss a phone call while logged on to the Internet. It is simple to switch from a phone call to GPRS, and vice versa.
Is it possible to securely connect to a corporate LAN over GPRS?
It is possible to access a private company internet network. Such access technically requires for a connection to be established between Yettel GPRS network and the company intranet (leasing a line or VPN through the public Internet network). This connection is established through a special APN that has been assigned to the company and only company employees that are subscribed to GPRS and this APN can access the company’s intranet.
